Does Tulum celebrate Day of the Dead?#

Yes: in Tulum, Day of the Dead is lived as Hanal Pixán, the Maya "food of the souls." In 2025 the public celebrations centered on the municipal cemetery and the Municipal Palace in Tulum town and ran four days, October 30 to November 2.

Mexico's indigenous festivities dedicated to the dead have been on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 2008 (proclaimed in 2003), which places them at the end of October and start of November, when the annual maize cycle closes, per the UNESCO listing.

What is Hanal Pixán?#

Hanal Pixán (also Janal Pixán) means "food of the souls": in Maya, janal is food and pixán is soul. Families remember their dead by offering the dishes and drinks they loved, according to the Yucatán state government's guide to Janal Pixán.

The same source lists what goes on the altar:

  • Mucbipollo (mukbilpollo): a large tamal filled with meat and spices, cooked underground; it is the centerpiece offering.
  • Tablecloth: white for adults, colorful for children.
  • Green cross: stands for the ceiba, the Maya tree of life.
  • Incense: guides the souls to the altar.
  • Salt and water: for purification.
  • Atole, fruit and tamales: round out the offering.

What happens on each day, October 31 to November 2?#

Each day of Hanal Pixán honors a different group, per the Yucatán state government:

  1. Saturday, October 31, 2026: the souls of children.
  2. Sunday, November 1, 2026: the souls of adults.
  3. Monday, November 2, 2026: a mass for all souls.

What can you see in Tulum during Day of the Dead?#

The Tulum municipal government has not published its 2026 program as of October 1. The 2025 program is the best guide: free events from October 30 to November 2 centered on the Municipal Palace, per the program published by El Heraldo de Quintana Roo on October 29, 2025:

  • October 31, 5 p.m.: Paseo de las Ánimas, a procession from the municipal cemetery to the Municipal Palace, with white or traditional regional dress requested.
  • October 31, 8 p.m.: Grupo Amaite concert at the open-air theater on the Municipal Palace esplanade.
  • November 1: the play "Amor y Muerte" (8 p.m.) and an altar contest on Avenida Tulum (8:30 p.m.).
  • November 2: regional altar exhibition (noon), a tamale-eating contest (5 p.m.), altar contest (6 p.m.), catrina costume contest (7 p.m.) and awards (9 p.m.).

The procession is the closest thing Tulum has to a Day of the Dead parade, but 2026 dates, times and venues depend on the municipal program; this page will be updated once it is out.
